Monsters & Monsters (Ch.1-10, H)
"We can't depend on it. The banks--the monster has to have profits all the time. It can't wait. It'll die. No, taxes go on. When the monster stops growing, it dies. It can't stay one size" (32).
The land owners have arrived to their property being run by farmers. They are not familiar with the ways of the farmers, but they sure know how a good farm should look like. It is all about business. All they do is test the land and check the crops. The farmers know their soil is not good. The land is dusty, dry, and unsuitable for cultivation. Yet they still have hope that conditions will become better, that it is just a bad time that will only be temporary and not permanent. They try to convince the owners that a good year may come to them next year with cotton. But the owners do not care. They and their monster want money and profits immediately and at all times. There is no waiting involved. This monster is the bank, and it needs money to survive. It is like a predatory animal, which is why it is being referred to as a monster. It has to consume money continuously to thrive and survive. If it has to destroy a few things in it's way, then it will do it. In this case, the banks turn a blind eye to the farmers' struggles and have only one goal: to take their land for cheap and make a huge profit for themselves. This is important because the farmers and their families are forced to travel somewhere else and make a living. Without any support it will be difficult to do so, but they have no other option. The selfish ways of the bank are destroying the lives of many farmers and their families.
